In 1987 the Aircraft was under Ames' sponsorship at Edwards AFB, California and had conventional structural instrumentation installed on the blades for testing. Sikorsky Aircraft was contracted to build a set of highly instrumented blades for the Black Hawk test aircraft: a pressure blade with 242 absolute pressure transducers and a strain-gauge blade with an extensive suite of strain gauges and accelerometers. On 22 September 1988 the Aircraft arrived at the Ames Research Center (ARC), at Moffett Airfield, California and integration of a data system for the highly instrumented blades was started. While the aircraft was still tail numbered 78-23012 NASA 748 was applied to the aircraft tail. This Black Hawk was also used in a test program to develop and demonstrate a method for identifying system stability and flying qualities for sling-load operations. |
