Originally constructed as an SH-60B this aircraft along with 162976 was selected as the prototype for conversion to SH-60R (later redesignated MH-60R). The conversion was undertaken by Lockheed Martin Systems Integration at Owego, New York.

In 2000, the Aircraft was delivered to Patuxent River, Maryland, for the start of a two-year Navy/contractor developmental test program.
