Piasecki Aircraft |
In May 2003, the YSH-60F/VTDP demonstrator was redesignated as the Piasecki X-49A "SpeedHawk". On 29 June 2007 the X-49A made its first flight for 15 minutes at Boeing’s New Castle County Flight Test Center. The flight included hovering, pedal turns, and a slow forward and sideways flight using the VTDP for anti-torque, directional and trim control. In all the X-49A accumulated 86 flight hours in 79 flights during the initial flight testing. All testing was restricted to the standard Seahawk’s flight manual limitation of 180 kt (335 km/h), but the X-49A demonstrated up to a 42% increased speed at equivalent power, and as much as 50% reduction in vibration and fatigue loads. The X-49A project has been relatively silent since completing its initial testing phase in 2008. |
