On 14 August 1987 a UH-60A Black Hawk helicopter from the 55th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron, Eglin Air Force Base, went down about 5:10 p.m. EDT Friday. The helicopter had made a refueling stop at Pope Air Force Base, NC and left at 3:30 p.m. on a routine mission to Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. Investigators found “a smoldering mass of materials” from the helicopter in a wooded area about 4 miles north of Pope within the boundary of the Fort Bragg Army base. (Call sign "Hawk 47")
