In August 1980 the aircraft was accepted into the Army Inventory and assigned to Electronics Research and Development Command Flight Activity (ERADCOM Flight Activity) at NAS Lakehurst, New Jersey. In March 1983 the aircraft was transferred to Fort Eustis and assigned to the U.S. Army Air Mobility Research and Development Laboratories (AMRDL). It was designated as a JUH-60A and being used as the Boeing Advanced Digital Optical Control System (ADOCS) demonstrator. The (ADOCS) was being developed on a UH-60A helicopter by the Boeing Vertol Company to demonstrate the feasibility of a digital optical control system. On 23 September 1989 the aircraft arrived at the Ames Research Center (ARC), at Moffett Airfield, California. While the aircraft was still tail numbered 78-23012, NASA 750 was applied to the aircraft tail. The aircraft was being used as the Rotorcraft Aircrew Systems Concepts Airborne Laboratory and dubbed RASCAL. The RASCAL cockpit has an evaluation crew station with flight-by-wire (FBW) controls on the right side and a safety pilot position with back-up hydromechanical controls on the left. In February 1999 the aircraft was transferred to Redstone AAF in Huntsville Alabama and assigned to the US Army Aviation Research, Development, and Engineering Command but remained attached with the Army Aeroflightdynamics Directorate (AFDD) at NASA Ames Research Center. |
