In August 1979 the aircraft was accepted into the Army Inventory and assigned to D Co/158th AVN located at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Aircraft was part of Task Force 158th which would become Task Force 160th (TF-160th). Note: In February 1982 the Aircraft was reassigned on paper to C Co/101st AVN but remained attached to Task Force 160th. In October 1983 this aircraft was on assignment with Task Force 160th (TF-160th) as part of Operation URGENT FURY, Grenada. During its mission on 25 October 1983, the aircraft was hit 48 times by 7.62mm gun fire wounding one of the pilots and severally damaging the aircraft. The crew was able to fly the aircraft out to the USS Guam but was unable to shut the aircraft down due to damage to the power control levers. The navy deck crew had to use fire hoses to shoot water into the engine inlets to basically kill the engines. Ultimately the aircraft was air lifted from the ship by a CH-53 and taken to Point Salinas, Grenada, not sure when but at some point, the aircraft was fully repaired and put back in service. In September 1986 the aircraft was transferred to NAS Patuxent River, Maryland and assigned to U.S. Naval Test Pilot School (USNTPS). Struck from Charge on 1 July 2002. |
